Fallout 4 PS4 Mod Support Bleak Outcome

Todd Howard announced mod support for Fallout 4 across all platforms in late February. Since then the game has seen the release of multiple DLC packs as well as the Creation Kit for Fallout 4 in April, and after that the Mod Support for the game came to Xbox One in early June. PlayStation gamers have long waited for their opportunity to mod Fallout 4 and enjoy the creations of other gamers. On September 9th Bethesda delivered the unfortunate news to their fans. In an update on their site they announced that the battle for mod support on the PlayStation 4 was going to remain unavailable for the unforeseen future.

Bethesda said in their update on the issue that "Sony has informed us they will not approve user mods the way they should work: where users can do anything they want for either Fallout 4 or Skyrim Special Edition". Reading this sentence makes me wonder if Sony tried to put some restrictions on the way mods functioned for these games, or if they were trying to censor certain content. I'm leaning towards the latter, personally, in light of recent events in the gaming industry and Japanese games trying to be localized for the United States. Games such as Fire Emblem Fates and Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 have been at the center of some of these controversies.

Now, if you've ever tried to install mods for either Fallout or Skyrim you know that there is a slew of NSFW mods available. It's my wondering that maybe Sony doesn't want to draw any more attention to its self as these controversies have painted the Japanese game industry in a less-than-great light.

Alas, for those of us playing Fallout 4 on the PS4 the ability to mod our game must wait, perhaps forever. Though, can one honestly complain? With the sizable DLC that was Far Harbor and the massive DLC that is Nuka-World I suspect we'll have plenty to do for many more hours to come.
